What Is Epigenetics and Why It Changes Everything About How We Approach Health

You have probably heard that genetics loads the gun and environment pulls the trigger.

Epigenetics is the science of that trigger.

Your genes are not your destiny

For a long time, the dominant framework in medicine was largely deterministic. If your parents had heart disease, you were at higher risk. If your family had a history of certain cancers, that history cast a long shadow. Genes were thought of as a fixed blueprint, and health outcomes were understood in large part as a function of the hand you were dealt.

Epigenetics changed that understanding fundamentally.

Your DNA sequence, the actual order of base pairs in your genome, is largely fixed. But the expression of those genes, which ones are active, how active they are, and when they turn on or off, is profoundly influenced by factors outside the genome. Your diet, your stress levels, your sleep, your environment, your nutritional status, and the lifestyle choices you make every day are all constantly communicating with your genome and influencing how it expresses itself.

This is what epigenetics studies. Not the genes themselves, but the instructions that tell the genes what to do.

Why this matters clinically

The clinical implication of epigenetics is significant. It means that genetic predispositions, while real, are not fixed outcomes. A genetic tendency toward inflammation, for example, does not mean inflammation is inevitable. It means that the choices you make about nutrition, stress management, and environmental exposure will either express or suppress that tendency more than they might for someone without the same variant.

It also means that personalized health interventions can be designed around your specific genetic landscape. Rather than applying general recommendations to everyone with a similar symptom picture, epigenetic counseling identifies the specific variants that are most relevant to your health and builds recommendations that speak directly to them.

What epigenetic counseling looks like at HBM

Tapp Francke Ingolia, MS, CNS leads our epigenetic counseling practice using the DNA Health test, a clinical genomic panel that assesses variants across key health pathways including cardiovascular function, hormone metabolism, methylation, detoxification, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

The results are not delivered as a list of risks. They are interpreted in the context of your full health picture and translated into specific, actionable recommendations for nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle that support optimal gene expression for your unique biology.

For many clients this is described as receiving an operating manual for their own body, one that is more personalized than anything a general wellness program could offer.

What you can actually change

The empowering reality of epigenetics is that the factors most responsible for gene expression are largely within your control. What you eat, how you manage stress, what you are exposed to in your environment, and how you support your nutritional status all have measurable effects on how your genome expresses itself over time.

Understanding your specific genetic landscape makes those choices far more precise.
